Safety Drills
Next week, students and staff will practice lockdown drills as a school. We will discuss these drills with students prior to them taking place and provide information to our students about why we’re practicing such drills.
These are rehearsals that we hope to never have to implement. However, we practice these drills to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency.
In an effort to provide families with an adequate heads-up about such safety drills, I’m including some information about how these drills will be practiced next week.
On Tuesday, April 5, we will be participating in a lockdown drill. “Lockdown” is a term used in the event of a threat or perceived threat at or near our school. During the drill on Tuesday, an intercom announcement will inform staff and students that the drill will begin. Staff will then be asked to secure their classrooms. Teachers will lock classroom doors, close the blinds, move students away from the windows, turn out the lights and remain quiet. The drill will last about three minutes, at which point another announcement will be made that the drill is over. Depending on the grade level, teachers will also share that in the event of imminent danger, they may ask students to help barricade the door to make sure no one can enter the classroom or ask students to quickly evacuate the building.
Teachers will inform students that during all of our safety drills, the most important thing for them to do is to listen to adult directions. Staff will also talk about ways to keep everyone safe in dangerous situations.
All information shared with students is age-appropriate and tailored to each grade level. If you do not want your student to participate in this drill, please notify me.
Tools that teachers will use during these conversations are housed on our district’s safety page, complete with scripts that will be used during drills and videos that summarize some safety drills. The scripts and videos were created by the District Safety Committee and videos were created in partnership with Eugene Police Department.
As always, feel free to contact me for clarification or more information. Thank you for your partnership to help ensure a safe school environment for all.
