Back to School Safety Reminders

Bethel Families,

We are counting the days until our students start back to school next week, traveling by foot, bike, car or bus. Please spread the word throughout our community to keep a watchful eye out for our students. Drivers need to remember that traffic of all kinds will be heavier and that there will be an increased presence of law enforcement to ensure student safety.

Please take the time to talk with your child(ren) about their safety when traveling by bus, walking or riding a bike or scooter to school. We have some helpful tips below.

 

At the Bus Stop:

• Arrive early at the bus stop – at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
• Stand 6 feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb while waiting for the bus.

Around the Bus:

• Cross in front of the bus – at least 10 feet (or five giant steps) – and make eye contact with the driver before crossing .
• Never walk behind the bus
• If you drop something near the bus, do not pick it up; tell the bus driver instead.

Getting On/Off the Bus:

• Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before approaching the bus or standing up on the bus.
• Use the handrail
• Secure any loose objects like straps on a backpack or drawstrings on a hood.

Behavior on the Bus:

• Buckle up if seat belts are available.
• Stay in your seat keeping head, arms and papers inside the bus.
• Talk quietly
• Keep aisles clear of books and bags.

 

Bike Riders

• Make sure your child always wears a bicycle helmet! Failure to wear one could result in a traffic ticket. Furthermore, in the event of an accident, helmets reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent!
• Choose the safest route between home and school and practice it with your child until they can demonstrate traffic safety awareness.
• If possible, try to ride with someone else. There is safety in numbers.
• Obey the rules of the road; the rules are the same for all vehicles, including bicycles.
• Always stay on the right-hand side of the road and ride in the same direction as traffic.
• Be sure your child knows and uses all of the appropriate hand signals.

 

Walking to School

• Pick the safest route between your home and the school and practice walking it with your children.
• Teach your children to recognize and obey traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.
• Only cross streets at designated crosswalks, street corners and traffic controlled intersections.
• Always look both ways before crossing the street and never enter streets from between obstacles like parked cars, shrubbery, signs, etc.
• Always walk and never run across intersections.
• Try and walk to school with other students. There is strength in numbers.
• Avoid talking to strangers. Teach your children to get distance between themselves and anyone who tries to approach or make contact with them.
• If a stranger does approach your child, make sure they know to immediately report the incident to you or a teacher.
• Teach your children to never get into a vehicle with anyone, even if they know them, without your permission.

Estamos contando los días hasta que nuestros estudiantes regresen a la escuela la próxima semana, viajando a pie, en bicicleta, en automóvil o en autobús. Corra la voz en toda nuestra comunidad para estar atento a nuestros estudiantes. Los conductores deben recordar que el tráfico de todo tipo será más pesado y que habrá una mayor presencia de la policía para garantizar la seguridad de los estudiantes.

Tómese el tiempo para hablar con su(s) hijo(s) sobre su seguridad cuando viaje en autobús, camine o ande en bicicleta o scooter a la escuela. Tenemos algunos consejos útiles a continuación.

En la parada de autobús:
