Dear Bethel families and staff,
Like many of you, we are heartbroken by the news of a shooting at an elementary school in Bend earlier today. Our hearts are with the students, staff and families whose lives have been impacted by this tragedy.
News like this hits especially close to home when it happens in a school community not far from our own. We know it can bring up feelings of fear, sadness and worry, especially for families sending their children to school each day.
I want you to know that keeping our students and staff safe is something we take seriously every single day. Across Bethel, we have safety plans and emergency procedures in place, our staff regularly practice how to respond to emergencies, and we work closely with local law enforcement. Tomorrow, you may also notice additional staff support at our schools as we work to provide some extra reassurance for students, staff and families.
But we also know that one of the greatest strengths of our schools is the people in them. The relationships our staff build with students, the trust we share with families and the way our school communities look out for one another are all important parts of keeping our schools safe.
Talking with your children We know some students may hear about what happened today and have questions or worries. Others may not know about it at all. We encourage families to follow their child's lead, listen to their questions and remind them that the adults in their lives are here to help keep them safe. Our school counselors and support staff are here for students who may need a little extra care or someone to talk to. Please don't hesitate to reach out to your school if your child needs support. These resources may also be helpful as you navigate conversations at home: Tonight, our thoughts remain with the Bend community as they navigate something no school community should ever have to experience. And here in Bethel, we'll continue doing what we do best: caring for our students, supporting one another and working together to make our schools places where every child feels safe and belongs.
Thank you for being part of that work.
Sincerely, Kraig Sproles Superintendent, Bethel School District |
