Understanding your student's STAR assessment results

Last Friday, we shared STAR Reading and Math assessment reports with families through ParentSquare! These reports provide a snapshot of your student's learning and help us identify strengths, areas for growth and ways to support their progress.

We've put together a simple guide to help you understand the scores and what they mean. Remember, STAR is just one piece of the puzzle! Teachers use these results alongside classroom work and observations to support student learning.

We encourage you to review your student's report and reach out to their teacher with any questions or concerns. We're happy to help!

Join us for Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on Nov. 19!

Every step has the power to make a difference!

On Thursday, November 19, Bethel students, staff and families are invited to participate in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, a special event celebrating courage, kindness, equality and the power of young people to create change.

Ruby Bridges was just 6 years old when she made history in 1960 as the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. Her courage helped pave the way for generations of students, and her story continues to inspire young people today.

In fact, Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day was started by a group of fifth-graders in California who learned about Ruby's story and wanted to honor her legacy. Their efforts helped establish a national movement that encourages students to walk together in celebration of fairness, inclusion and the importance of standing up for what's right.

Parent/Caregiver Survey is open until the 23rd!

Bethel's annual Parent/Caregiver Survey is open, and we'd love your feedback! This is your opportunity to share what's going well at your child's school, what could be better and how we can continue to support students and families.

The survey is anonymous and only takes a few minutes. Your voice matters, and we hope you'll take a moment to share your thoughts. Thank you!

Our front office staff are truly amazing. This story (thanks, Lookout Eugene-Springfield) perfectly captures all of the small and large roles our staff take on each day to create welcoming learning spaces where students feel like they belong. While battling chronic attendance takes a village, we know that our front office staff are the ones on the frontlines. They are the first face that students see as they enter the building, and their impact is immense!

They're also the ones tracking attendance! Check out this story to see all of the ways our front office staff are connecting with students, and helping them to know that showing up every day is important.

Reminder about our school safety language

Keeping our students and staff safe is one of our most important responsibilities, and we want families to feel informed about the safety procedures we use in our schools!

As a reminder, this school year Bethel schools adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a statewide approach that uses consistent language during drills and emergencies. While many of our safety practices remain the same, some of the terminology has changed.

Here's a quick reminder of the five safety actions:
  • Hold – "In Your Room or Area. Clear the Halls." Students and staff remain in classrooms while hallways are kept clear. Learning continues as usual.
  • Secure – "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors." Used when there is a safety concern outside the school. Everyone comes inside, exterior doors are locked and learning continues. This replaces the term "lockout."
  • Lockdown – "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight." Used when there is a threat inside or very close to the school. Students and staff take immediate protective action. Bethel continues to use ALICE procedures during lockdowns.
  • Evacuate – "To a Location." Students and staff move to a designated safe location.
  • Shelter – "State Hazard and Safety Strategy." Students and staff take protective actions during hazards such as earthquakes or severe weather.
Our schools practice these procedures throughout the year so students and staff know what to do in an emergency. We want families to be familiar with this language, too, so you know what it means when you receive a school safety notification.

We've attached a quick-reference guide defining each of these safety actions. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our schools safe and prepared!

School health screenings

Health Screenings for grades K-5 and 7 will be performed throughout the district in December.  Screenings will include vision and dental. Please contact your school's front office if you do not want your child to participate in health screening.

Support safe storage of firearms

Keeping students and families safe is a shared responsibility, both at school and at home. One important way we can help prevent accidents and injuries is by ensuring firearms are stored safely and securely, out of reach of children and young people.

The Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority have developed a helpful resource with simple steps families can take to promote firearm safety and prevent injuries.

We encourage all families to take a moment to review the attached Firearm Safety and Safe Storage resource. Thank you for doing your part to help keep our students and community safe!

It's a WRAP!

The Bethel Green Teams ask you to consider our planet this holiday season. If you celebrate by exchanging gifts, please join us and say, “it’s a wrap!” to wrapping paper. Statistics show that over 3 billion pounds of wrapping paper end up in our landfills annually, and that’s just in the United States. Wrapping paper is not recyclable because of its added glitters and paints. You can still enjoy the element of surprise by finding innovative but sustainable ways to hide your presents. Empty cereal and frozen food boxes will do the trick. Everyone could use another cup or towel, as well as a pillowcase or t-shirt, thrift one to conceal your gifts and it will be a two-in-one! How much fun would it be to see who among your loved ones can create the most unique way to give a gift?  We encourage you to spend your money on items that will be used, not on wrapping paper that, while beautiful, will simply be torn to shreds and tossed into our already overstuffed landfills.

E-Bikes: Reminder for parents

  1. If it can go faster that 20mph with a throttle, it’s not an e-bike, it’s an e-moto and illegal everywhere in Eugene except private property.
  2. Only kids over 16 are allowed to ride e-bikes. Everyone under 16 should ride regular bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) information

Bethel School District welcomes recommendations for students who may qualify for Talented and Gifted (TAG) services. Students may be recommended by parents, guardians, family members, teachers or other school staff at any time during the school year.

If you believe your student may qualify, please complete our TAG Referral Form. Once a recommendation is submitted, a school team reviews student assessment data and teacher feedback to determine eligibility. Families are notified of the results by mail and email.

Families of students with existing TAG plans should receive information from their student's teachers.

For more information about TAG services or assistance with the referral process, please visit bethel.k12.or.us/tag or contact your school's principal.
